Shanghai American School was honored to be the only international school from Shanghai invited to compete at MathCounts, an elite global math competition held annually. It's not only our high school students who travel the world for competitions—this event, designed for middle school students, took place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where 120 top students from ten schools came together to put their skills to the test.

SAS Pudong and Puxi each sent ten students, selected through rigorous school-level competitions. At MathCounts, SAS students competed in individual and team rounds, but what made this event even more special was the collaboration between our campuses with a unique mixed team. Competing as one team, they demonstrated the power of unity, combining their strengths and learning from one another to excel on the international stage.

SAS students performed impressively, securing spots in the top ten out of 120 students across various competitions. Notable achievements included strong individual placements, such as Kyle X.’s, a 7th grader from Puxi campus, 2nd place finish in the Countdown Competition, as well as top finishes in the team events—demonstrating the students’ dedication, mental resilience, and ability to perform under pressure.

Reflecting on the experience, Jessica Z., a 6th grader from Puxi shared, “In addition to gaining a great deal of competition experience, I learned how to maintain motivation and focus under more challenging circumstances.” Similarly, Aaron X., a Pudong 7th grader emphasized the importance of teamwork and mental resilience, saying, “From the competition in Vietnam, I have learned how to effectively work with peers and also withstand pressure.”
